Grand Valley Women & Calvin College Men reach for the Stars

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Soccer gets a bad rap.  It is boring to watch.  There isn't enough scoring.  It takes too long for anything to happen.

I could on for 90 minutes.

It is a lot like chess.

For those who enjoy and understand both games, that is part of the thrill.

There are battles going on all over the field at the same time, all the during the game.

You do something in the first half of the game that sets up the checkmate move at the end.

Today, for the first time, two local colleges with two local and involved head coaches and many local players will play for two  National Championships.

Both games can be watched live on the internet at CBS Sports.  In addition, there are videos of the previous games.  There is a small download to go through and then you need to look for the games.

Indiana Tech is led by Grand Rapids GoalKeeper Josh Verhulst.

Indiana Tech shocks #2 Seed and advances to the Sweet 16.

Indiana Tech senior keeper Josh Verhulst played an exceptional match for the Warriors and made the last of multiple grade A saves with just under a minute left in regulation as he scrambled from his back to get a hand on a sure goal by Bengal forward Jermaine West (six total shots) who was less than six yards in front of the Warrior goal.  In fact, UMFK put constant pressure on Indiana Tech in the final five minute with West missing just wide in the 86th minute followed by a header which went just high by Andre Anderson in the 87th minute.

2011 NATIONAL TOP 100 MEN

Ranked 9th - TJ Slooten

One of the most interesting (and frustrating) things about soccer is that one player can be looked at by a coach and he can each have a opinion and other coaches who look at the same player might have a completely different one.

One such example of this is a player, TJ Van Slooten,  from the Grand Rapids area Northview High School who was recently accorded the "honor" of Division 2 - 3rd team All State.

For most high school players, this would be great but in this instance, the same player has also been ranked by an ONLINE website, Top Drawer Soccer as the 9th best player of all the players who will graduate in 2011) in the United States.

When you get to to the Top 100 of 2010, change the box in the upper right to 2011 to view.

2010 Top 100 >>>

How can this be?  How can a player be ranked 9th best in the country and only make the 3rd team of MHSAA Division 2?

It is mostly due to the process.

A players High School coach must go to all the meetings, fill in all the forms, follow up with the Division Chairs, make phone calls to other coaches etc, etc.... Basically, the coach must fight for his/ her player.

Process >>>

If the Coach doesn't do all of these things, for whatever reason, the player doesn't get the credit inside their own state that they richly deserve.

Winter is Here

Woodland Sports has posted the information for indoor sessions.

In addition to the "standard" leagues played on full field:

8 v 8 (12 and down) for $625

7 v 7 (13 and up) for $625

Woodland Sports is offering something new this year:

5 v 5 leagues (all ages) for $300

The seasons will be 6 games long and all games will be on Saturday.  The games will start at 8:00 am and run through the day on the South Field.

The games will be played on our smaller fields that are 28 yds. x 36 yds. with smaller goals (6 ft. x 12 ft).

These leagues were designed to lower the cost of playing soccer while offering the players something new and different so the possibilities of "burnout" setting in are minimized.

Who is #9 in White?

...Lindsay Jipping....

She is playing now for Hope and currently #2 in all the stats as a Freshman.  She won 4 State Championships at Unity Christian, including the post LH one.  She played for Coach Tara Wegner with the West Michigan Fire.  She played with some of the very first U10 Girls teams that played in GVSA when she was 8 years old.  I have known her since she was 4 years old.

MSYSA STATE CUP

This weekend, the MSYSA Girls State Cup quarterfinals were played in Saginaw.

The GR Crew placed 4 teams in the quarterfinals (U14, U16, U17 and U18) missing out only at the U15 level where another team from West Michigan, The Kalamazoo Kingdom defeated the Crew 15 in pool play to advance.

There were high hopes.

It is a great accomplishment to advance to the quarterfinals and an even greater one to get to the semi's.

Unfortunately, only two teams from each age group can make it to the finals and only the GR Crew U14  advanced to the MSYSA Finals to be held at Ultimate Sports in Pontiac on October 17.

The GR Crew U17 surprised almost everyone (including themselves, I suspect) when they dominated and beat a very strong Vardar team, 5-0 on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals.

An interesting back story in this age group is that until the Crew 17 crashed the party, the same 4 teams have been in the Semi-Finals every year since they were U13 (Michigan Hawks, Michigan Gators, Michigan Jaguars, and Vardar).

THIS YEAR RESULTS

U14 >>>

U15 >>>

U16 >>>

U17 >>>

U18 >>>

The only other West Michigan clubs to place a team in the quarterfinals are TKO (Kalamazoo) at U18 and the Phoenix SC  (Lansing/Flint) at U16.

The results of the weekend are consistent with past history and confirm that the Michigan Hawks (based in Detroit not to be confused with their "affiliated" club  Michigan Hawks based in Grand Rapids) are the Club to beat in Michigan.

The Hawks "ONLY" put 3 teams in the Finals this year (U15,U16 & U18 ).  Last year they placed a team in all 6 Finals (U13-U18) ultimately winning 3 (U13, U15 & U18).

Both the U14 & U17 Hawks teams lost on Kicks from the Mark (Penalty Kicks).

Both teams were coached by Adil Salmoni.

Adil Salmoni grew up in New York and played youth soccer for the F.C. Westchester 73's from 1988 to 1991. He played for Brown University from 1990 to 1992 and for Racing Club de Paris while attending l'Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau, France.

Both teams could still advance to the Regionals through their play in the MRL

Soccer America's Top 40 Youth Clubs Named

Ordinarily, this might pass in West Michigan with no more than a quick read and small sigh since the Detroit based clubs,  Wolves/Hawks and Vardar are normally the only Michigan clubs that are known outside of Michigan.

That has changed now, primarily due to the Grand Rapids Crew 15 Boys team.

People have been watching them for years but they were the lone beacon of light shining from West Michigan.

Their success has brought searchlights into West Michigan looking for other signs of advancement.

Apparently, they found it.

The Casa Mia Bays have won U.S. Youth Soccer national championships in each of the last three years. In addition, the Baltimore Bays won the inaugural U.S. Soccer Development Academy championship in the U-17/18 age group with a dramatic overtime win. Chris Agorsor, now at Virginia, was named the U-17/18 Player of the Year, and teammate Andrew Bullis won Academy Goal of the Year. The Bays had teams in each of the 2008 U-13 to U-15 Maryland state finals, so there's more talent on the way.

The Baltimore Casa Mia Bays also advanced two teams to the finals at the U.S. Youth Soccer Championships Sunday, July 26 in Lancaster, Mass.

Their U-19 Baltimore Casa Mia Bays, will seek its second title when it plays North Atlanta SA in Sunday's McGuire Cup final.

The U-15 Baltimore Casa Mia Bays, the 2009 National League champions, will play Arizona's Sereno White in Saturday's final at the Citizens Bank Fields.

THE FRAHM MUD BOG

Goes Again This Saturday Sept 12

This is something a little different for the page but it could be fun.

Beginning again at noon on September 12, join the fun again at the Frahm Mud Bog.

Spend the day watching adults and children trying to traverse a swamp in all manner of vehicles.

Apparently in it's 5th year (although it has just come to my attention), this is one man's project on his farm in Sand Lake.

They ask only for a $5.00 donation.  Bring your own food and beverage or buy from "DINGO'S Hot Dog cart.  They are also roasting a pig (or two).

The location is Pringle Road in Sand Lake (north of M57, east of Meyers Lake Road, south of Sand Lake Rd. NE)

Follow the signs and have a good time.

Something to Think About

In the Fall, daylight is often a problem for evening games.

Before rescheduling any games, check out this website:

which can tell you the time of sunset for any day of the year and any location in the United States.

There are two times to check:

  • Sunset (when the sun starts going down)

  • End of Civil Twilight (when it really is too dark to play at all).

On an overcast or rainy day it will get dark even sooner!

"...The first key to player development is good coaching at a young age.  The absence of good coaching results in bad habits and under developed skills and ideas.  Therefore, professional coaching is strongly recommended by age 8.

The second ingredient is training.  Players should be training  4 - 6 hours for every 1 hour game they play.  Training is where soccer players are shaped.

Another element is competition.  Players must compete against teams that offer a challenge.  Because the only true test of a players ability is how they compete in games.  It’s important to note that winning is secondary.  The focus should be on competing and learning.

The final key ingredient is playing with other talented players.  If an individual player is far superior to his/her teammates, that player will experience frustration.  Therefore, that player needs to be offered a higher level of play as a challenge...."

These finals are set up a little differently than most.  The top seeded three teams play the same three lower seeded common opponents and the top two teams play for the championship.

This type of format lent itself to a troubling issue.

The Crew 15 finished in a three way tie for second at 2-1 but did not advance due to Goal Differential.

"...Getting around two defenders – one with a nifty nutmeg – the midfielder forced his way into the box from the right side. With Odyssey ‘keeper Matt Dishno rushing out to cut down the angle, Catic fired a shot right past him and inside the near post, giving his team the early lead.

“I got a lucky little touch, passed by another guy with a touch, and just shot it,” said Catic. “I didn’t even really see the ball go in the net, I just ran around the goal to celebrate with my teammates. It was an incredible feeling. To be in the national final, with fans screaming…I didn’t even know what to think at that point....”

FARTLEK

Soccer Endurance Training

Endurance training for soccer isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but you've got to put in the miles if you want to be successful. One method for taking some of the boredom out of continuous running session is Fartlek training.

Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish, is a form of conditioning which puts stress on the aerobic energy system by keeping moving without stopping for a long period of tim.

There is a bit of a difference between Fartlek training and regular continuous running training. Because of the varying speeds involved, you will also tax the anaerobic system just a bit.

Most fartlek sessions last at least 45 minutes and have everything from aerobic walking to sprints. In any event, fartlek sessions are a great form of soccer endurance training.

Fartlek Session Example 1

  • Warm up with a steady jog for 10 minutes

  • Run hard for 3 minutes, jog slowly for 1 minute

  • Repeat 6-8 times

  • Cool down at a steady pace for 10 minutes

Fartlek Session Example 2

  • Warm up with a steady jog for 10 minutes

  • Jog for 60 seconds

  • Run hard (3/4 pace) for 90 seconds

  • Jog for 45 seconds

  • Sprint for 10 seconds

  • Jog for 30 seconds

  • Run backwards for 30 seconds

  • Walk for 30 seconds

  • Run hard for 60 seconds

  • Repeat 3-4 times

  • Cool down at a steady pace for 10 minutes

********************************************

Whistle Fartlek

The coach, using a whistle, controls the session over a 1200m circumference grass area.

  • 10 minutes warm up jog

  • When the whistle is blown the athletes run hard until the whistle is blown again. Pyramid session of 4 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minutes, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes with a 60 second jog run recovery between each run

  • 10 minute cool down jog

******************************************

Gerschler Fartlek

This is good training for getting fit quickly when combined with steady running.

  • 10 minutes warm up jog

  • Repeat 3 times - Stride hard for 30 seconds, jog 90 seconds. Repeat with 15 second decreases in recovery jog e.g. 30-90, 30-75, 30-60, 30-45, 30-30, 30-15 and 30-15-30

  • 10 minute cool down jog

*******************************************

The Fartlek (Swedish for "Speed Play") Training method is a great fitness tool that is excellent for soccer specific conditioning. It is less monotonous than the normal interval training and can be easily customized to focus on the needs of the team. It only requires 20 to 30 minutes including warm-up and cool-down where the player trains at varying speeds and intensities. Below you will find a Fartlek Training session that would be suitable for soccer.

  1. Warm up with a steady jog for approximately 7-10 minutes

  2. High intensity sprint, for approximately 60-75 seconds

  3. Light Jog for approximately 130-150 seconds

  4. High intensity sprint, for approximately 60-75 seconds

  5. Light Jog for 120 seconds

  6. Repeat 3-4 times

  7. Cool down with a steady jog for 7-10 minutes

You can also mix in any number of the following activities:

  1. Run hill or stairs

  2. Vertical jump from crouch position, 15-20 times

  3. Up-Downs: squat down, place hands on floor, kick legs back so that you are in the top of a pushup position, do a pushup, kick legs forward again, and jump up as high as you can (that's one rep), 10-15 reps

  4. Push-ups

  5. Sit-ups

  6. Lunges

May 30 - van Elst Benefit
This has been a long, frightening, and painful journey for Kendra and it will continue for several more months. As a way to help the van Elst family through this challenging time and to assist them with significant unexpected expenses, the Rangers Soccer Club (Erwin is our Director of Coaching) is going to put the FUN into a fundraising day on Saturday, May 30 at the Rangers soccer fields in Hudsonville (on 28th Avenue between Port Sheldon and Rosewood). We will begin with donuts and beverages at 8 AM until 11 AM. Hotdogs, nachos and pizza will be served from 11 AM until 3 PM. During the entire day while the scheduled soccer matches are held there will be a silent auction running with great donated items up for bid.

There will be Rangers gear, Gazelle sports items, Avon and Mary Kay cosmetics, and many more exciting, surprise, big-ticket, donated items included in the silent auction. You will just have to come out to place your bid and join the fun. (If you have some item or service that you would like to donate for the auction, please contact Terri DeBoer at:

The kids will enjoy participating in the face painting booth. Additionally, between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM a soccer “Skills Competition” will be held for various age groups with prizes for the winners. There will be a variety of skills tested so kids “bring your best game.”

If you would like to contribute a cash gift, an account has been opened with Huntington Bank in the name of Kendra van Elst Benefit. Donations may be made directly to this account through mail (6544 28th Ave. SW, Hudsonville, MI 49426), or contribution checks may be delivered to Rangers personnel at the concession stand on May 30.

Come and join us on May 30 between 8 AM and 3 PM as we offer a helping hand to Kendra and the van Elst family. We will have fun doing it! Please pray for God’s blessing on this event even as He has blessed Kendra in her recovery thus far.

MSYSA State Cup Results

The quarterfinals and semifinals were completed this past weekend in Saginaw.

Just as in the High School playoffs, the West Michigan area is now producing teams on a consistent level that can compete for and win titles.

The Grand Rapids Crew U13 girls led by Head Coach, George Moni they will represent the west side in the State Cup finals against perennial powerhouse, the Hawks.

read the story >>>

The Grand Rapids Crew U15 Boys enter the finals (again) and will seek to win yet another of their State titles on their way to a Regional and another crack at a National Title.  Opponents have recognized the futility of playing this team straight up and now play 7-8 men behind the ball hoping to keep it close, capitalize on a mistake and come out on top.

The Vardar West U17 Boys is once again in the finals looking to repeat as State Cup champion.  Led by Head Coach Chris Allen (also now the Davenport Women's Head Coach and looking for players - hint, hint), the team has battled through the season, winning tough games, as they try to cope with losing several key members of the team.

Congratulations to these teams and all the other West Michigan teams that chose to enter the statewide event and test themselves outside of the small pond we call West Michigan soccer.

I will be posting detailed coverage of the State Cup later this week.

College Soccer

Too often, when playing college soccer is brought up, people focus on Division I.

I suppose this is natural as everyone has  dreams and the right to dream.

The problem is that much too often, the reality does not match up with the dream.

There are approximately 320 Division I colleges offering women's soccer today.  Each has, at most,  9.9 total scholarships to hand out at any one time.

That means that there are roughly 3200 Division I scholarship opportunities available in total.

Every year, assuming the coaches try to give 1/4 of the scholarships to each class, there are 800 available nationwide.

Thankfully, there are alternatives if you want to go to college, play soccer and have your education paid for.

However, you must think outside the box.

Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (GRCJ) U15 Boys Qualify for Nationals....Again!

The US Youth Soccer National League Under-15 Boys concluded their season on Sunday, March 22nd in Pontiac.  The Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (MI) finished their 3 game weekend with a record of 2-0-1.  Combining their earlier results of 2-0-2 from last December in Dallas, TX, they finished with an overall record of 4-0-3 just behind the Baltimore Casa Mia Bays 94 from Maryland.

By claiming one of the two top League spots, the Grand Rapids Crew Juniors will represent the National League at the 2009 US Youth Soccer National Championships July 21-26, in Lancaster, MA and have earned the right to return to the National League for the 2009-2010 season.  This will be the second year in a row that the team has represented West Michigan at the Nationals.  Last year the team earned the right to participate through winning both the State Cup and Regional’s.

Good Neighbors - Revised

EDITOR's NOTE: I have revised my editorial a bit to reflect information sent to me by individuals who were displeased with my editorial and who were concerned that I had written it without being fully cognizant of all the facts.  I was sent copies of long email strings between and among all the various parties involved in this.  I could have posted them in their entirety but that almost certainly would have proved embarrassing for the individuals due to their tone and content.

This editorial is a result of the information posted below in the tournament section.

Two West Michigan soccer clubs have decided that the summer soccer season in Grand Haven should be exactly one weekend long.

The Tri-Cities Strikers (based in the Grand Haven area) have held a 3 v 3 tournament for 10 years and use the event as a club fundraiser.

Last year, the Strikers had the opportunity to "co-host" Soccer in the Sand and declined.

Soccer in the Sand (SITS) is a business model that sets up and runs tournaments for profit.

"Co-hosting" typically means that the club will assist the organizers in rounding up teams to pay the entry fee in return for a share of the proceeds.

Last year the SITS date was set early.  The Strikers traditional weekend was not available to them and they ultimately chose the same weekend as SITS due to availability.

This year the same thing occurred.  The Strikers were offered the opportunity to "co-host" and declined.  The SITS date was set early and the Strikers ultimately picked the same weekend due to availability.

SITS approached the Grand Rapids Crew (based in Grand Rapids) to "co-host" and they accepted.

I had mentioned Quick Step Travel (QST) as one of the for profit businesses that the Crew aligned themselves with.  It was pointed out to me that QST is "only" a sponsor just like Meijers and others and shouldn't be mentioned.

Unfortunately, I believe this is disingenuous at best and specious at worst since the owner of QST was involved last year in the promotion, recruitment and advertising of SITS, involved this year the same way and is also a past Board member of GVP, the club that merged with GRASA to become the Crew.

Meijers, like most sponsors of tournaments does not have this type of involvement.  They typically pay a fee to the tournament to be included in programs and to help the local club.  It is public relations.

Which brings me back to my original point.

You would think that with all the people involved that one of them might have said something like:

"...Hey, the economy is down, money is tight, let's allow the local club to pick their weekend first and than we pick a different weekend and let them have their soccer fundraiser without interference from us..."

I guess that would have been too simple.

Congratulations

West Michigan has developed some very fine soccer players over the years.

Two of the best are twins.  They attended Forest Hills schools.

Kari Klynstra (her bio) went to Wheaton College in Illinois.

Kacie Kleynstra (her bio) went to Messiah College in Pennsylvania.

In and of itself, this is remarkable but the real story is even better.

Over the last 4 years, Wheaton College and Messiah College each won two NCAA Division III National Championships.

What could be better?
