STATEWIDE Scores & Game Reports

May 22:    FHC 3 Lowell 3     FHC won on PKs
Very entertaining game. FHC would score and then Lowell would tie the game. Went back and forth all game. FHC was the better technical team. They were able to string passes together and work the ball forward and across the field. Lowell defended Gerst and Stachel well but did so with a number of fouls. Lowell athleticism kept them in the game. Two goals off flip throws helped them stay in the game. The referees got attention from both sides. FHC wanted a call on one of Lowell's goals. Lowell wanted a PK call for a hand ball in OT. Their first game was FHC 1 Lowell 0 with the second being decided by kicks. A potential district final betweenthese two should be interesting.

May 22:    East Jordan Girls Soccer traveled to Harbor Springs Monday. Harbor Springs came out fast and hard and tallied 10 goals to defeat East Jordan 10 - 0. Fullbacks Katherine Rowley and Danielle Wiser worked hard all game, turning the ball out and setting teammates, but we didn't succeed in getting through the harbor defense. Kelsey Poineau played a strong game in the midfield moving the ball and breaking up the attack. Games like these are difficult, we know how Harbor Springs attacks, but we lack the experience to mark and break down their game. That said, I was pleased that the ladies worked hard, no one gave up and quit trying. For Harbor Springs: Cooper Dendel scored 3, Morgan Lindsay 2, and Anna Causley, Lucy Causley, Alexandra Osetek, Kristen Koehler and Erin Bogart each scored 1.

May 15:    East Jordan Girls Soccer traveled to Kalkaska Monday. Kalkaska took the first half, scoring 4 goals, but East Jordan came back the second half by scoring twice and stopping Kalkaska's attack. Unfortunately East Jordan didn't overcome Kalkaska's first half, so went down to defeat 2 - 4. Katherine Rowley and Melanie Hillaker teamed up twice with Katherine scoring both goals and Melanie getting both assists. Goalkeeper Brandie Boike made 18 saves, coming on strong in the second half to prevent any goals in the half. Brandie is growing into the position and made some outstanding stops. Katherine and Melanie's midfield partners BobAnn Fick and Jeanne Schultz also played well; Jeanne had her best game of the season, playing very aggressively. The ladies got off to a slow start tonight, but they didn't give up and turned in a very good second half. Each line pushed a little harder, workedtogether to move the ball and moved to win more free balls. It is good to see the play of this young team starting to come together. It gives some hope going into end of season tournaments and for the prospects for next yeaScoring for Kalkaska: Erica Fox with 2, Lindzie Lugiewicz and Kim Sills with 1 each.

May 11:    LMC defeated Lakeland Conference leader River Valley in a drving rainstorm, 1-0, at River Valley. Jordan Roseboro's penalty kick in the 22nd minute of the first half was all that LMC needed to win, in a game that displayed tough defense from both teams. LMC had 20 shots on goal, and River Valley had 18. LMC keeper Catie Osborn, normally a forward, had 10 saves in a substitute role for regular keeper Alex Petlick who was injured in practice earlier in the week. River Valley's Jordan Cronin had 10 saves. Osborn made several crucial stops of RV shots, especially in the 2nd half. LMC avenges an earlier 5-1 loss to RV and improves to 3-10-1. RV falls to 8-3-1. Halftime score was LMC 1, RV 0.

May 10:    FHC 1     Lowell 0
The game was as close as the score indicates. The lone goal came on a PK after the goalie pulled down an attacker who was about to score. This occurred early in the second half and Lowell played one short for the remainder of the game. Lowell played very good defense. FHC was not able to get a large number of quality shots. The FHC defense was not challenged all that many times.

May 10:    Hart 3 - Whitehall 2 ot

May 10:    East Jordan Girls Soccer hosted Grayling Wednesday evening. With 14 minutes left in the first half East Jordan scored the first of three goals in a four minute window to go into half time with a 3 - 0 lead. East Jordan scored one more goal half way through the second half to defeat Grayling 4 - 0. East Jordan's first two goals were scored by Whitney Kraemer with Megan
Warnos and Melanie Hillaker picking up the assists. The second two goals were scored by Katherine Rowley with Melanie and Megan again having the assists; it was a night of twos. Goalkeeper Brandie Boike made 10 saves to pick up the shutout. Fullbacks Britney Kline, Alison Romero and Danielle Wiser all stepped up to overtake players and put the ball forward to our team. Fullback Samantha Higdon used her speed to overtake a Grayling player to stop a breakaway. Kelsey Poineau and BobAnn Fick, along with Melanie and Megan were a very active midfield line that passed the ball well and managed 10 shots on goal. This was by far the best game the ladies played all season. It was exciting to watch as the ladies attacked the ball every opportunity they had. Grayling is a much more evenly matched team and the ladies thought more about what to do, rather than just reacting. We had a good crowd and their cheering really encouraged the ladies too.

Justine Nolen scored her 5th goal of the season, with 17 minutes remaining, as the Gladiators earned their first league win of the season 1-0 at Lakewood Thursday night. Ann Verfailie played the ball into Nolen, who turned and fired far post for the game winner. Fowlerville settled in after a shaky start that saw several dangerous chances for the host Vikings, including a shot of the post in the first 10 minutes. Andrea Szura recorded the shutout with 10 saves, and Savannah McFarlin turned in a great defensive performance in a new role man-marking Lakewood's dangerous Kayla Durham. Heather Hegberg, Heather Sheldon, and Casey Baldus led the defense to the season's second shutout. Nolen nearly opened the scoring several minutes earlier, after an explosive run into the penalty box resulted in a penalty kick. Nolen's penalty kick was saved. Fowlerville improves to 2-7, 1-3 in the CAAC. The Gladiators return home on Saturday with a contest against league foe Lansing Catholic. JV start time is 11AM, with the Varsity to follow at 12:30PM

May 4;    East Jordan Girls Soccer traveled to Boyne City Thursday evening. Boyne did most of the scoring, three in the first half and two in the second to beat East Jordan 5 - 1. Katherine Rowley scored the lone East Jordan goal and Melanie Hillaker picked up the assist setting Katherine up with a very nice pass. Kelsey Poineau and BobAnn Fick joined in the midfield activity passing and attacking. Britney Kline played a good game in her fullback position, stopping Boyne's attack many times. Fullback Danielle Wiser also had a strong game. As a coach I saw several times where the ladies stepped up and played like a team, passing, moving to space, looking for where to play the ball to. It is my hope that these instances will grow and that this group of ladies will become a team.

April 27:    East Jordan Girls Soccer hosted Harbor Springs Thursday evening. Harbor Springs came out and scored 9 goals in the first period and another in the second to defeat East Jordan 10 - 0. It is difficult to express what we did well in this game other than that the girls worked hard. Coming off a tough game last night we were a little low on energy and never really seemed to get our legs working; we seemed to be a step behind all game and our feet just wouldn't hit the ball. Katherine Rowley and Melanie Hillaker both had good games fighting hard to win the ball and get it out of our end. Katherine was able to break free to get a shot on goal, but the rest of our advances were controlled by Harbor's defense.

April 26:    East Jordan 1, Elk Rapids 11.   East Jordan Girls Soccer traveled to Elk Rapids Wednesday evening. Elk Rapids came out fast and scored 9 goals in the first half. East Jordan scored in the second half, and then Elk Rapids scored 2 more.
Katherine Rowley worked very hard to make offense against Elk Rapids and after many tries did score on a breakaway, receiving a pass from Danielle Wiser who gets the assist. Midfielder Kelsey Poineau stepped up and had her best game of the season, leading the team in steals and making several very nice plays. Melanie Hillaker also had a strong game in the midfield, working hard to win the ball. As coach I was very proud of the ladies tonight who regrouped and played hard on the offense against a very good team. Games like this encourage me because in the midst of being beat soundly I saw the East Jordan ladies moving the ball, and thinking through what to do, rather than just reacting and kicking at the ball.  I'm sorry, I did not get who scored the goals for Elk Rapids, my fill in statistician didn't mark the players for them.

Megan Warnos scored the second goal through shear determination as the Grayling goalkeeper made the initial stop, but dropped the ball, and Megan fought through to finally kick the ball to the back of the net. Melanie Hillaker and BobAnn Fick played very well in the midfield. Melanie was a thorn in Grayling's side all game, working hard to be the first to the ball to keep the attack on. BobAnn was able to move the ball up through her side to start the attack many times. Midfielder Kelsey Poineau came on strong in the second half to turn play back to the attack many times. This was a close game with many exciting plays by both teams and for the spectators a fun game to watch. Jessie Baker scored the Grayling goal.

April 21:    Final score: Burt Lake NMCA 8, East Jordan 0        East Jordan Girls Soccer hosted Burt Lake NMCA Friday. The game moved both ways pretty well, but Burt Lake was able to finish while East Jordan failed to find the net.  Katherine Rowley played a strong game in both the midfield and as a forward. She led the team in shots on goal with 8 and played an aggressive game in the midfield to make many steals. Also in the midfield were Melanie Hillaker, BobAnn Fick and Jeanne Schultz who each played with a lot of heart and made a big difference for our team. In the fullback line Danielle Wiser and Samantha Higdon stepped in to turn the play back many times. Justine Nolen connected with Jamie Jarrell in the 3rd minute of play to open the CAAC season vs Lansing, but the Gladiators were unable to hold that lead before succumbing Thursday night 8-1 at Lansing Catholic High School. Lansing catholic scored 3 times in the first half, and 5 times In the second as Fowlerville fell to 0-5 on the season, and 0-1 in CAAC play.

The team improved in several key areas, having several dangerous chances, and the shots on goal were closer than the score (19 for LCHS, 8 for Fowlerville). Haleigh Lane and Andrea Szura shared goal keeping responsibilities, and turned back several good scoring chances. Heather Hegberg and Mandi Heinrich played well for the Glads who look to register their first win Friday in a rare 4PM start at home vs Chesaning. April 20:    East Jordan Girls Soccer hosted Kalkaska Thursday evening for a rough and physical game. The game started out pretty even, but at about halfway through the first half, Kalkaska scored. They added another goal with five minutes left in the half. In the second half Kalkaska again scored about halfway through the half and then three more times to defeat East Jordan 7 - 0.

East Jordan Goalkeeper Skylar Persons started her first game and played very well, stopping 18 shots, including two penalty kicks. Brandie Boike filled in for the last 10 minutes and picked up 3 saves including a penalty kick. Katherine Rowley played a strong game in the midfield, leading the way on the attack but making many steals and intercepts. Samantha Higdon played well as a fullback and then in midfield; in addition to several steals she made three non-keeper saves. The team really pitched in to help the goalkeeper making 11 non-keeper saves.

As coach I was proud of the way the girls kept playing through many collisions as both teams are inexperienced. It is hard to keep getting knocked down or run into and to keep getting up and trying. It showed good character and desire and that will help this team grow up and improve as the season goes on. I was also proud that they kept trying to create offense, hoping to score, even as the score went lopsided.

Kelsey Poineau and Katherine Rowley lead the team in the midfield working hard all game to try to break down Charlevoix's attack. This game was a bit of a let down for the girls after doing well against Boyne City, Charlevoix played hard and well and we just didn't adjust well to a fast game. This is a place our inexperience shows itself, but the girls didn't give up, so I am happy with their effort.
