Is rugby and american football the same thing?

Is rugby the same thing as american football except from postitions.

No. Not even close. The games have a common root from about 140 years ago, but since then have diverged so much that the skill sets hardly cross over at all. Nowadays they have no more in common than -- say -- soccer and field lacrosse. Or cricket and American baseball.

Totally different sports. Look at wikipedia.com

Well it's not the same at all. I am a South African. We love our rugby. I spoke to an American about their football and our rugby. The first difference is that rugby is played with steel studs, The American was shocked about the steel studs. There are many differences. You can find them online.

Two very different sports!! Watch video of both games

Not exactly they're complete different sports with different rules. Historically speaking they used to be almost identical, american football evolved from rugby. How to easily identify american football from Rugby -American football players wears helmets and pads (armor) Example of Rugby:

No, two different sports with different rules. MySec- To shed light on your profound ignorance, Rugby players don't need protection because Rugby's game rules forbid dangerous hits that are otherwise permitted in American Football. It has nothing to do with "manliness." American Football started with no pads and it was almost banned by the government due to numerous players dying from hits if it weren't for the introduction of protective gear as an alternative.

No rugby is for real men who don't need helmets and protective gear to tackle one another.

Nope, outright different sports. Rugby is played in the undeveloped world by cigarette smoking peasants. Real men? I think not. (American) Football is played by the world's top athlete's and requires perseverance, talent and heart.
