How many downs in rugby?

How many downs are there in rugby and when a player gets tackled and he passes it through his legs what is that called?

There are two forms of rugby -- Rugby Union and Rugby League. In Union, which is by far the most popular and interesting version of the game, there are no downs. Instead a tackled player must release the ball by immediately offloading or planting the ball onto the ground. Both sides are then free to contest for the released ball in a phase of the game called a "ruck". In other words, the ball is up for grabs after every tackle and turns over quite frequently. In Rugby League -- which is pretty much impossible to find outside of it's heartland of regions of Northern England and Eastern Australia -- a team has to score within six uncontested downs or turn the ball over. The competitive aspects of the game are gone completely -- no rucking, no lineouts, no striping the ball from the runner and even the scrums are uncontested. It leads to a mind-knumbingly repetitive game where your offensive options are pretty much summed up by four charges up the middle, an outside pass and then a kick. After a tackle in a League game, the tackled player gets up and heels the ball back to a teammate to start the next down. It's called a "play-the-ball".

There are no downs in rugby, a ruck. In rugby league they have six tackles, it is called a play the ball.

Rugby Yawnion has unlimited tackles. League has 6. By the way, ignore "blim" answer, absolute nonsense.

basically its passing to your team through a rook.
