Without x-ray It hasnt swelled up and it isnt purple

if swelling continues for more than one day go to the doctors it's probably broken.

I am not sure if you can break your hand, but you can break your wrist or fingers. You say it hasn't swelled up, either? If it was a break, it would start to swell up in about 5-20 minutes probably- trust me, I know. If it hasn't swelled up a lot within 30 minutes, I don't think it would be a break. When you try to move it, but it is so painful you can't, it is a break I would say. It could just be (severely) bruised- your hand swells up a lot with severe bruising- trust me, I know that as well. It really hurt. I'm no doctor though, just a girl who has broke her arm, finger, torn a ligament in her finger/hand (I'm not sure), had the leg of a sofa dropped on her finger, and who has severely bruised her whole hand. I almost broke all the fingers- when I widened my fingers apart almost as far as they would go, they were all still touching where they were so swollen. It looked like my hand was zombified, it was swollen, black blue green yellow and purple, and with some of my fingers taped together and bandaged, it smelt disgusting too! :)

Where is it painful exactly? When did you do it? You can have a broken bone without swelling or bruising, although that is unusual. There is no definitive way to be sure without an X-Ray. Take some pain killers, put some ice (wrapped in a tea towel) on it for 10 minutes every hour. Keep it elevated and if its still painful tomorrow go to your local ED department

An xray is the only way. If a contusion, then ice for a day, then nothing the next day, then warm heating pad after that. Elevation of your hand will help. If these things still don't help, you have to go to a doctor.
