Union by far. League isn't even close. Once the Union game went openly professional in 1995, the League teams actually had to switch to playing in the summer months. They simply couldn't compete head-to-head against the Union competition during rugby's traditional winter (September through May) season. Or you can look at it another way. Greater London, which is by far the largest market in England, currently supports five first rate Union sides -- Wasps, Saracens, Harlequins, London Irish and London Welsh. League supports one.
In England the super league doesn't get a look in. In fact they changed league in England to a summer sport so as not fully compete with football and rugby.
