People love nfl because its a full contact sport. My theory is if rugby were "Americanized"( I use that term loosely) such as having regional teams in USA and making the rules simpler etc. it could become really popular. People love carnage. Believe it or not Rugby is already one of American's fastest growing sports. Obviously it will never be as popular as say baseball or basketball, but then again it isn't America's main sport. The USA will never be as good as New Zealand simply because New Zealand lives and breaths Rugby, the same way the USA are almost untouchable at basketball, because the level of competition is so high over there.

They already have done that. The game is called rugby league. Not as complex as rugby so would be easier to follow but if you like your rugby the rules are pretty right though I would like to see rucking brought back.
