How to make a right choice between boxing and rugby?

Posted at: 2014-07-08
I used to play rugby and boxing. I really like them both and I am good in both sports. But I do not know what to choose to continue, because I have 3 semesters more to graduate and after university I would like to become a pro athlete. Help me to make a right choice. It is really important for me, because I dedicated all my life to sports.I used to play rugby and boxing. I really like them both and I am good in both sports. Well then disappoint an entire nation by playing Rugby League (SBW joke hehe)

Karim, I am not sure what a "right" choice would mean. You presumably mean "right for Karim," but except for this message, we do not know you. However, since this is a Rugby board, you can count on most of us thinking rugby is the right choice, because, after all, that is what WE chose. If you don't know who boofheads like Quade Cooper and SBW are, you won't get the jokes about boxing. However: Free Advice. Give up boxing - not because rugby is better, but because it is causing irreversible damage to your brain. And if you move form amateur to professional rules, the damage will increase dramatically as you lose the helmet and go to lighter gloves. The human brain did not evolve to take the damage inflicted by boxing, and the evidence is completely clear that your chances of irreversible brain damage (see Ali's Parkinson's) is all but inevitable. Look, you can get concussions playing rugby, too, and many of us have had them. But that is not the POINT of rugby, whereas knocking an opponent out is exactly the point of boxing. Good luck. Mark L
