Is rugby played on turf or grass?

im american i play football we play on both im just wondering what rugby does

I've played rugby for 9 years. We only ever play on grass never turf.

Turf and grass are the same unless you mean astro turf but rugby is played on grass

In the uk I know that the Widnes Vikings have got astro turf at their ground this year. Like someone quoted above its not very kind to the exposed parts and I can't imagine how on earth it's been passed!!

The International Rugby Board's Laws state that the game "should" be played on grass, but allows for the use of an artificial surface, should it be able to pass a very rigourous set of standards set. These standards are laid out by the IRB in "Regulation 22" which turns out to be the size of a small book. But for all practical purposes it doesn't happen. I am not aware of any club, anywhere in the world, professional or amateur, which maintains an artificial surface on its' home pitch. Which makes sense. In the process of tackling and rucking, rugby players spent a lot more time in violent contact with the ground than do their gridiron cousins. You wouldn't have a single square inch of exposed skin left intact after a match on an artificial surface.

I'm pretty sure its played on ice..

Im almost sure rugby is played only on grass. I have never watched or played a rugby game on turf and I have been playing for 9 years competitively.
