Well of course it will vary from team to team but very generally: at least two of the spare forwards will position themselves on defense between the 15 metre mark and the first receiver, just back of the ten metre offside line. On defense you are in a position to cover the gap between the lineout and backs, to move to the blindside should they attack down that channel, or to join the maul if the opposition tries to drive the ball. On offense a pod of forwards in that position gives your first receiver an option to the inside. And it can never hurt to put yourself in a position behind the flyhalf in order to support should he decide to straighten up and take the ball into contact himself.
