Springboks did play bad but they had a few good games. They started the year at 3 in the world rankings and moved up to 2 by the end of the year. In the middle of the super rugby season they won all three games in the series against England. They did have a few injuries to key players though.

The Springboks are in a building phase. With so many top players retiring after the world cup and a new coach what do you expect.
Yeah, they didn't have the best year, that is completely true. To be honest I put it down to their backs, who really aren't anything special. Don't forget they have lost their best players this year (Schalk Burger and Bismarck du Plessis especially), plus Victor Matfield, John Smit and Fourie du Preez have all retired. They have the best forwards in the world by a mile though, and this is coming from an All Blacks supporter!
No as was pointed out they are second in the rankings and have won two RWCs. Not too bad.
