Some people are more prone to them than others. I played for over 25 years, mainly as a prop, and I never got them. I taped my ears with electrical tape.

Unless you're playing adult rugby and there's a lot of force involved, i wouldn't worry too much. Obviously there's no time limit on getting cauliflower ears, it just gradually happens over the years as your ears get torn on different occassions and it all starts adding up.
