Well actually it depends on the type of rugby you are playing and the particular competition. A rugby union squad will dress 22 (or in some competions 23 players) and place 15 on the field. Substitutions are (with a few minor exceptions) permanent. A rugby league squad will dress 17 players to put 13 onto the pitch. They are allowed a total of 12 "interchanges" using these 17 players.
