My 14 year old son has lost 1/6 of his arm socket cartilige , will it grow back? is his rugby career over?

My son plays flanker, captains his school A team and is in his second year of training with a famous rugby club. The consultant refuses to say what the chances are of his cartilige regrowing. Just that he will review him in January 2013. Will his arm heal? Can we do anything to help in the way of food, health supplements and exercise? Could he consider playing rugby next year in another position or would this be plain stupid? Should he give up rugby until he is 18? Or should he give up rugby now for good? Rugby is his life and I want to support him in the best way possible. ThankyouMy son plays flanker, captains his school A team and is in his second year of training with a famous rugby club.
