Rugby: If I lose fat will it make me a worse prop?

I want to be a good prop but I also want to look good. I'm 18stone 8pounds (I'm 16). I'm thinking if I lose 8-12 pounds of fat I'd look decent. I'm a great prop but I wonder is it my weight or my strength that makes me good.I want to be a good prop but I also want to look good. I'm 18stone 8pounds (I'm 16). Props should be strong and heavy - but that does not mean fat. You are carrying plenty of weight now - losing a bit will probably improve your game as you will be fitter and stronger. Talk to your coach about both a fat loss and muscle gain exercise plan.

I think if you keep doing waight tranning and loose fat you will be a better player! That is very heavy for a 16 year old so lossing a bit of waight will not effect your game to much :)

Losing weight won't make you a worse prop! The key factor in being a good prop is being able to get around the field efficiently, and being strong. Extra weight won't help you in either case really. It might add a little bit of strength, but will detract from your mobility too much. I'd advise you to start going to the gym, maybe 3 times a week to start with, and doing some weights training as well as some cardio during each session. This way, you will lose some excess fat that you may be carrying, whilst building muscular strength. within a few months (or maybe even less, if you work really hard), you should have lost quite a few pounds, whilst building strength. You might not see any massive muscular gains initially, but be patient, they will come.
