What position would I fit best in Rugby?

Posted at: 2014-07-08
I am joining a team when I move soon and would like to know what positions I can look into and become familiar with. I am 6'3, 215 lbs. I am pretty strong and relatively fast. I can throw and toss well. I am a great kicker. Any ideas where they will be looking to place me? This is an adult mens team and they take in and teach new guys. Their initial thoughts in looking at you will be either second row or loose forward. Depending on their needs, they might consider you at centre (you are along the lines in terms of size of SBW for the All Blacks). Realistically, you are probably taller then they would expect for front row or scrum half, and if you are not already experienced at fly-half, they won't be likely to place you there, but you could play any other position on the pitch. You sound like a loose forward to me. A big 8-man has lots to offer almost any team, both around the field and in line-outs.

My thinking is much like Mark L's. You're too tall for a front rower, but too heavy for a back, particularly at a beginning amateur level. 2nd rower or loose forward, depending upon just how mobile you really are, or can learn/train to be. Of course you (and you're coaches) will know more once you have given the game a try. Have fun!
