I am having problems with my drop kicks on restarts. How can i get them high and short like pros? Something my team can get under to contest for the ball. I play fly half. Any tips, ideas, videos? I am a freshman in college and currently play scrum half on a mens team. I have been playing for 5 years and have really perfected my drop kicks these last two seasons. I dont take any run up at all. i drop it about an arms length in front of me and kind of swing my leg trying to hit the bottom. I bring my leg across my body for short kicks and in front for distance or points. It takes lots of practice to get it how you want, but once you get good, you'll be an even more valuable asset to the team.

Watch videos of internationals, there is almost no run up if they are putting it high, knees bent, and finish with the leg high, not much of a drop kicker myself, but all i can say is keep watching the pros because different ones have different techniques. A great person to watch is Johnny Wilkinson, his style is a little unorthadox, however he is hitting the ball more on the bottom than on the side, that is what gives it the height sorry thats all i got, hoped it helped :)

What you want to do is take only a couple of steps run up, lean back a load and follow through the ball loads. your leg should be really high when you're done, maybe at chest height or so.
